Finishing resin properly is one of those steps that can make or break a project. You can pour the cleanest mix, measure everything perfectly, and still end up with a dull or uneven surface if you rush the final stage. Achieving that perfect resin finish isn’t about expensive tools or complex tricks. It’s about patience, consistency, and understanding how your material behaves once it’s cured.

When you first remove your piece from the mould, it’ll probably have small imperfections. Maybe a few ripples, a bit of cloudiness, or tiny marks around the edges. Don’t panic, that’s normal. Every maker experiences that stage. The first step is to sand, and this is where most people slip up. Sanding needs to be gradual and controlled. Start with around 400 or 600 grit if the surface is rough, then slowly work through finer grits,up to 2000 or even 3000 if you want an ultra-smooth, glassy look. Keep the surface wet as you go; this prevents heat buildup and helps remove debris that can scratch the resin.

Once the sanding is complete, the next step is polishing. This is where you see the transformation. A polishing compound and a soft microfibre cloth or polishing pad will restore clarity and depth. You’ll begin to see those colours and patterns come alive under the light. If you desire a mirror-like finish, keep polishing in small circles and take your time. For a softer appearance, try a satin or matte sealer,it provides a more natural finish while still shielding the resin from fingerprints and scuffs.

Protection is just as vital as appearance. Resin can yellow over time if left unsealed or exposed to sunlight. A UV-resistant top coat or protective wax will help preserve your piece and keep it looking new for an extended period. If your project requires an absolutely flawless surface, you can even apply a thin flood coat of resin to level everything out and seal in the shine.

It’s also worthwhile to experiment. Try different finishes on various pieces. A high-gloss top looks fantastic on coasters or jewellery, but a matte or satin surface can make artwork or sculptures look more refined. You'll soon develop a feel for what suits each type of project.

Ultimately, achieving that perfect resin finish isn’t about perfection alone. It’s about care. Taking the time to sand properly, polish evenly, and protect the surface shows respect for your work. When you hold a finished piece that feels smooth, balanced, and completely yours, you'll know you’ve got it right.
